E-Waste in Figures

•According to the Nairobi Declaration of the United Nations Environmental Programme, held in 2006, the global e-waste market increases each year between 5% to 8%. In 2009, the e-waste market was estimated at 11 billion USD.

•According to electronic waste producing sources, an estimate of 50 million tons of annual e-waste is produced. This amount constitutes about 5% of all the waste produced globally.

•In the European Union, an annual of 14-24 kg per capita of e-waste emerges, and only 8 million tons of the 24 million tons/year are recycled in an appropriate way.

•In Turkey, it is estimated that 4 kg of per capita e-waste emerges each year. The main determinants of the e-waste amounts are the development level and the income per capita of the countries.According to statistics of Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, 537.000 tons of E-Waste is occuring every year.

•Only 7-10 % of the E-waste that occuring in Turkey, is being recycled in licensed facilities.

• 25% of e-waste is composed of televisions and monitors. These products are considered as hazardous waste due to lead and phosphorus included. 9 of these products totally have a potential of polluting 1.000.000 cubic meter of water.

• Another 25% of e-waste is composed of the cooling devices ( A/C’s and refrigirators ). Such devices damage the ozon layer and also considered to be causing cancer because of the CFC gasses they include.

• The amount of mercury in a single flourescent lamp is capable of poluting 30.000 liters of water.

• Beginning with May 2013, municipalities serving a population of 450.000 or higher are responsible of collecting e-waste in Turkey.

• There are 90 millions of registered cell phones in Turkey. Moreover about 11 to 12 million cell phones are sold annually. The average period for using a cell phone is about 18 months in Turkey; which results in a disposal of 1,5 to 2 million devices per year. Even 1-2 % of these disposed devices is unfortunately not subject to recycling.
